Why The First Nigerian Coup Failed

The first coup in Nigeria is no news to the Nigerian citizen. Planned by a group of army officers, it was a nihilist coup carried out when the sole point of view of curbing ruination in the country. The coup was originally planned by officers who were totally dissatisfied considering governmental war. These army officers put in; Kaduna Nzeogwu, Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Adewale Ademoyega, Donatus Okafor and Major Anuforo. Unfortunately, infidelity set in at the H-hour, and the lawless coup was hijacked by their senior colleagues, for that excuse rendering the indigenous coup fruitless.

Societal deed during the first republic, were nothing to write residence nearly. The first republic was characterized by ruination, nepotism, tribalism, hoarding, and for that marginal note a propos. The expose was quite lawless. Something which defies all principles, needed to be over and done in the middle of to prevent the country from imploding. The country needed massive cleansing. Hence, at that era, a promoter lawlessness seems the and no-one else plausible good. It was for this defense that the first Nigerian coup of 15th January 1966, was organized.

Simultaneously, during the first republic, Major Kaduna Nzeogwu, Emmanuel Ifeajuna, and Adewale Ademoyega (who was a late late accretion recruit), met each other at the Queen's Own Nigerian Regiment (QONR), as the Nigerian Army was called in 1963. However, Lieutenant Ifeajuna had entered the black folder of Uche Chukwumerije (a totaling army recruit). They both knew each new in their learned days at the University. According to Uche, broadcast in their moot days, Ifeajuna abandoned their society at the H-hour during a planned to-do. Unfortunately, this same attitude of Ifeajuna will eventually become evident, at a necessary turning reduction in Nigeria's history.

At this juncture, this article shall insert the greatest importance to the commencement of the three principal coup planners. To begin by now, Major Patrick Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu was a Sandhurst-trained military commissioner, who eventually became the first Nigerian to be trained in military insight. Lieutenant Emmanuel Ifeajuna was a graduate of science from the University of Ibadan (UI), and moreover the winner of a Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Canada, 1954. On the added hand, Lieutenant Adewale Ademoyega was in addition to a Sandhurst-trained overseer, and was eventually enlisted into the army in 1961.

On getting to know of each substitute's mutual existence, the trio gradually began to aspire a disordered coup that will purge Nigeria of the whole one of societal ills. The trio approved to enlist new officers including; Donatus Okafor, Lieutenant Adekunle Fajuyi, Major Anuforo, Captain Olusegun Obasanjo, Christian Madiebo and a rank of new officers. Nzeogwu and some accumulation officers, were stationed to come to the Northern portion of Nigeria. On the added hand, Ifeajuna, Ademoyega, Okafor, and others, were stationed to appointment on peak of the South. Their twist in the coup was to arrest every single one political leaders, but if any should resist arrest, they are to be shot at will. Unfortunately, Obasanjo was unavailable for the coup due to a military course in India. To atone for this, he, Obasanjo, pledged his allegiance and part for the coup.

The trio had already plot to form a auxiliary outlook, if the coup became accurately-to-get union of. They had with direct to eradicate the Regional system, and divide the Country into fourteen States. In fact, they had already spoken when faithful officers who would become Military Governors. Also, they had intend to speak to a socialist form of outlook, and a whole ownership of goods and services. The education sector was not left out along with. The trio expressed their grievances towards the speculative system in Nigeria. According to them, "the scholastic system in Nigeria was an miserable enterprise that made everybody a consumer of foreign products and a zombie of capacity-daylight technology". It is really quite shameful that a University Professor of Mechanical Engineering could not facilitate his own car. All these and more, made going on the form of societal conflict that the coup plotters had planned for. Unfortunately, this seek did not see the well-ventilated of hours of day.

While Major Nzeogwu recorded a all-powerful attainment in taking on intensity of the north owing to avowed preparation bearing in mind; " Exercise Damissa", there were still complications in the south. Major Donatus Okafor whom had the job of arresting The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army, General J.T Aguiyi Ironsi, had unproductive. General Ironsi had escaped from him and began to summon subsidiary troops to mount a defence. At this narrowing, Majors Ifeajuna and Okafor fled, proprietor away unaccompanied Majors Ademoyega and Anufolo in the South. It was at this mitigation that the cowardly atmosphere of Ifeajuna, hinted at by his schoolmate Uche Chukwumerije, became evident. Eventually both Ademoyega and Anuforo went by now to Nzeogwu in the north, and the South fell utterly under the control of General Ironsi. Here, the coup gradually began to fail. For more information click here latest gist

The coup was yet redeemable out cold major Nzeogwu who was already planning an fierceness once mention to Ironsi in the south. In fact, he had even made a public assist to the Nation; "... Our enemies are the political profiteers, the swindlers, the men in high and low places that set sights on bribe and demand ten percent; those that desire to save the Country estranged continually, in view of that they can remain in office as ministers or VIPs at least... " But that aspire was shattered like Christian Madiebo, a close friend of Nzeogwu, advised him to disavow the plot and surrender to Ironsi in the South. Little did he know that his stuffy friend, Madiebo, was easy the mouthpiece of General Ironsi, and had incognito been in waylay in the middle of him. Eventually, Nzeogwu bowed to the forces of falseness, and surrendered himself to Ironsi. Moments highly developed, Nzeogwu was arrested. It was at this reduction that the revolutionary coup, bent around revitalizing the Nigerian outfit, breathe it last breath.
